NNS Hosting Entry-Level Engineer Hiring Event

Newport News Shipbuilding Talent Acquisition is hosting a hiring event Feb. 14 for entry-level engineering opportunities in the Nuclear Propulsion Division. Qualified internal NNS employees who apply will be invited for an in-person interview. Qualified external candidates who apply will be invited for a video interview. This event is for December 2022 or May 2023 new engineering college graduates. The deadline to apply to be invited for an interview is Feb. 2.

Aerospace REU at Georgia Southern University

National Science Foundation Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU): "Propulsion, Aerodynamics, Materials and Controls of Aerial Vehicles" at Georgia Southern University

This Georgia Southern REU Site will be an interdisciplinary research experience for freshman to senior engineering students in the areas of aerospace, propulsion, aerodynamics, materials and controls of aerial vehicles. The program will stimulate students’ interest in conducting research, and develop their understanding of interdisciplinary concepts through hands-on learning, STEM problem-solving skills, and enhance their ability to apply theoretical concepts to research problems. The program is designed to promote independence and the ability to collaborate effectively as part of a highly diverse team.

Applications are currently being accepted and will close on March 31, 2023 for the upcoming summer.  The program will run between May 15, and July 23, 2023. We encourage students to apply early to ensure they have time to gather the requisite document package needed to complete their applications.  Students will receive a stipend of $6000 plus support for travel and materials ($300), subsistence ($860), and housing ($500) for the 10 weeks of the program. Apply here.

The Navy Acquisition Development Program (NADP) 

NADP is a highly selective intern program designed for recent college graduates. It provides up to two and a half years of training and education tailored to various acquisition career fields. The program includes structured management training, formal education, diverse rotational assignments, extensive on-the-job training, and graduate education tuition assistance.

Upon successful completion of the NADP, you will become a permanent civil service employee at the GS-12 Full Performance Level (FPL).

The Center for Innovation in Ship Design (CISD) at Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division in Bethesda, Maryland (greater Washington, DC area) is the interviewing and recommendation agent for Code 82 (Ship Design) for individuals potentially interested in a career in surface warship, naval submersible, naval combatant craft or maritime unmanned systems design.

DoD SMART Scholarship Program

The Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship-for-Service Program, funded by the Department of Defense (DoD), is a combined educational and workforce development opportunity for STEM students. SMART scholars receive full tuition, annual stipends, internships, and guaranteed employment with the DoD after graduation.

The SMART application is open August through December of every year, with awards being granted the following spring.

All applicants must be

  • a citizen of the United States, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, or United Kingdom at time of application,
  • 18 years of age or older as of August 1, 2023
  • requesting at least 1 year of degree funding prior to graduation (which starts at the program start date),
  • able to complete at least one summer internship (multi-year scholars only)
  • willing to accept post-graduation employment with the DoD,
  • a student in good standing with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale,
  • pursuing a technical undergraduate or graduate degree in one of 21 STEM disciplines 
  • able to produce a fall 2022 college transcript from a regionally accredited US college or university, OR be pursuing a graduate degree at a regionally accredited US college or university.

The Night Vision and Electronic Sensors Directorate is located within Fort Belvoir, about 25 miles from CatholicU. Students heard about the lab's work investigating many potential technologies for the detection of buried explosive hazards and its humanitarian importance, as well as the many opportunities in this interesting field for mechanical and electrical engineering and computer science graduates.
