Dr. Hang Liu, the Associate Dean for Graduate Programs and Faculty in the School of Engineering, and Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, will be the next recipient of the Professor Robert Meister Distinguished Faculty Fellowship. He will hold the position for a three-year term, from 2023-2026.

Dr. Liu, who holds a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania, is an expert in the fields of wireless communications and networking, mobile computing, Internet of Things, content delivery, multimedia communication, and network security. He has published over 100 academic articles in leading journals and conferences, including the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Transactions on Mobile Computing, IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications, and IEEE INFOCOM.

Prior to joining Catholic University in 2013, Dr. Liu worked in various senior research and management positions in wireless networking industry; his professional experience includes positions at InterDigital Communications INC, Technicolor Corporate Research Lab, and NEC Laboratories America. Between 2004 and 2012, he served as an adjunct professor at Rutgers University, working in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and the Wireless Information Network Laboratory (WINLAB).

While at the Catholic University of America, Liu has conducted government-sponsored research in wireless networking and mobile computing, serving as the principal investigator for multiple NSF and industry sponsored projects. In addition, he serves as the Associate Dean for Graduate Programs and Faculty of the School of Engineering, managing graduate student academic affairs, providing leadership to the faculty, and advising the Dean of the School of Engineering.

The Professor Robert Meister Distinguished Faculty Fellowship honors faculty who have made significant contributions to the School of Engineering through their research, teaching, and service to the Catholic University community, and beyond. The fellowship is named after the late Robert “Bob” Meister (B.E.E., M.A., Ph.D.) an alumnus, faculty member, chair of the Department of Electrical Engineering, and Professor Emeritus, who was a long-time contributor to the School of Engineering, devoting nearly 70 years of his life to its advancement. As Chair of the Department of Electrical Engineering (1971-1997), Meister significantly contributed to the growth and development of this department, and hired current department chair Nader Namazi and Dean Emeritus Charles Nguyen. This fellowship strives to preserve and enhance Dr. Meister’s legacy; recognizing faculty members who embody his dedication and commitment.

Dr. Liu has significantly contributed to the school over the past 10 years, specifically through his research and leadership. When asked about what this fellowship means to him, Dr. Liu said, “Prof. Meister dedicated to teaching and research for over fifty years and made tremendous contributions to the School of Engineering. I am inspired by his legacy and feel honored and humbled to have been chosen for the Professor Robert Meister Distinguished Faculty Fellowship.” Dr. Liu looks forward to further contributing to the School of Engineering, and inspiring his colleagues, students, and community alike.
