Julia Schlottmann, Catholic '22, is an Architecture and Civil Engineering Dual Degree graduate from Poughkeepsie, NY. She shares why she chose to attend Catholic University and the School of Engineering, and what advice she has for prospective students.
Why did you choose to attend Catholic University and the School of Engineering?
"I grew up close to New York City and love the city feeling, but wanted to attend a college with a closed campus feel and lots of vegetation. I fell in love with Catholic's beautiful 176-acre campus the moment I saw it, but then also fell in love with all the opportunities living in Washington, D.C. provides. Between all of the free museums, monuments, and endless lists of activities, I have never gotten bored living in the city, and it's all been right at my fingertips with Catholic's own redline metro stop!
The city also provides boundless opportunities for internships, especially in the construction field. The engineering and architecture dual degree program set me up for success with four internships during my undergraduate studies and now with a full-time engineering job!"
Why do you want to be an engineer?
"I have always loved not only math and science, but also art and the natural environment too. I wanted to be able to utilize my talents to create positive change in the world, especially as it relates to the human person and sustainability. My goal is to engineer a better, greener tomorrow!"
What's been your favorite part of being a student at Catholic University?
"The people. I have met my best friends, fiancé, mentors, and coworkers here. Walking around campus, I always was able to see someone I knew that would give friendly smiles or be ready to ask about how I am doing. Everyone is so supportive of you throughout your time here and in-post graduate life too."
What advice would you give to prospective students?
"Take advantage of everything your future college has to offer! Join clubs (both academic/professional and fun) and go to university-funded events! You can meet so many new people (and lifelong friends), but it's also a great opportunity to try new things and challenge yourself outside of the classroom."
