On February 6th, 2024, the Center for Academic and Career Success hosted the Spring 2024 School of Engineering Networking Night and Informational Interviewing Event in Maloney Hall. Employers, students, and faculty spent the evening discussing career opportunities, jobs and internships, and professional development.
Students developed their networking skills and established connections with employers from various engineering disciplines and STEM-related industries. Students also completed pre-screen interviews during the informational interviewing component of the event, to improve their interviewing skills and line up follow-up meetings with prospective employers.
Representatives from various organizations and companies across the region were in attendance. Some of the notable employers included Clark Construction Group, Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), Walker Consultants, BAE Systems, and Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA).
Noah Ventura, a junior Mechanical Engineering student, said, “It was an amazing experience to talk to students, professors, and employers alike. Hearing about the vast research they have participated in or the projects they are currently working on was both a privilege and a learning experience. This event has made me even more excited for my future as an engineer.” Speaking with employers and alumni provides greater insight and perspective for students regarding career paths they are considering. Opportunities like this inspire students, offering them confidence and the initiative to pursue a rewarding and exciting career within engineering or a STEM-related industry. Madelyn Renzi, a sophomore architecture major said, “This was a beneficial experience that provided insight and networks for the career I am pursuing. The Catholic University of America offers incredible opportunities for the student body.” Events like this help students explore different careers paths, as well as confirm interest in a career they may have already discovered.
In addition to the employers in attendance, School of Engineering alumni offered support and mentorship to the students throughout the evening. Alumni help to connect students with career related opportunities and encourage professional development and confidence. This event was a great demonstration of the many industry connections Cardinal alumni have and the importance of facilitating these types of networks within the wider Cardinal community.
The School of Engineering prioritizes professional development and career readiness, offering these types of events throughout the year to help undergraduate and graduate students enter the workforce prepared and confident in their ability to network and acquire jobs in their desired career paths.
