Charles Nguyen's research interests include time-varying control systems, control of large space structures, decentralized control, control of robot manipulators, closed-kinematic chain manipulators, robot vision, intelligent control, fuzzy logic control and medical robotics.
He is a fellow of the AAAS and a senior member of the IEEE and ASME. He was the recipient of the CUA Academic Vice President Research Excellence Award in 1999, the GWU Distinguished Alumni Scholar Award in 2002, the Lifetime Achievement Award from World Automation Congress in 2004 for contributions in robotics and intelligent automation, and the Community Service Award in Education from Asia Entertainment Inc, in 2004. He received the 2006 Excellence in Community Service Award from the Vietnamese American Medical Research Foundation (VAMRF) in February 2007, the Leadership Award from the International Network of Engineering Education and Research (INEER) in September 2007 and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the District of Columbia Council of Engineering and Architectural Societies (DCCEAS), February 2009. He also received The Asian Heritage Award from the Asian Heritage Society in 2014.
He was appointed by President Bush to serve on the Board of Directors for the Vietnam Education Foundation, 2004-2007.
He is the founding editor of International Journal of Intelligent Automation and Soft Computing and Associate Editor of numerous journals.
Dr. Nguyen served as dean of the School of Engineering from 2001-2017 and chair of the Department of EE&CS from 1997-2001. To recognize his achievements during 16 years serving as dean of the School of Engineering, in 2017 a group of engineering alumni established an endowment of the Dean Charles Cuong Nguyen Leadership Award to be granted annually to an engineering graduating senior demonstrating outstanding leadership.
