This past fall, the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science began offering free artificial intelligence (AI) workshops for Catholic University students. These workshops included group discussion and tutoring sessions on AI, ranging from introductory-level instruction to more advanced concepts and applications. Students received hands-on experience and learned about how these concepts and tools can be applied to solve-real world problems!

workshopThe workshops were established through the collaboration of several campus groups, including the Graduate Student Association, the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), and the Center for Advanced Research in Computer Engineering (CARCE) at the School of Engineering. The sessions were led by Dominick Rizk, Ph.D., assistant professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and the director of the CARCE lab. Additional support was provided by faculty members, Sergio Picozzi, Ph.D. and Matthew Jacobs, Ph.D., of the same department.

The program is set to continue through the Spring 2025 semester and into the next academic year. This program ultimately seeks to increase the presence of AI and its applications at the School of Engineering, especially as AI becomes increasingly prevalent in our world. Exposing students to cutting-edge AI research will not only supplement their learning in the classroom, but also in regard to how AI can be used effectively in the workplace and for their future career. AI literacy will be important for future cohorts and this program will continue to provide opportunities to further develop this knowledge at Catholic University.
