On March 28-29, undergraduate students from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering competed at the combined 2025 Mid-Atlantic East and West American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Student Symposium at Pennsylvania State University, in State College, Pennsylvania. The symposia is one of the core foundations of student involvement within the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), as a means to highlight each university's and college's ingenuity.
Twenty-five students, all members of Catholic University's ASCE Student Chapter, competed against students from twenty-four other colleges and universities in the region in the following competitions: concrete canoe, steel bridge, surveying, 3D printing, sustainable solutions, and paper competitions. This year’s competition included the most students representing Catholic University in recent memory and the students delivered an amazing performance. These are the awards and recognitions earned at this year’s competition:
- Most Improved Student Chapter (58 point increase in our annual report)
- Concrete Canoe: 2nd place overall
- Steel Bridge: 1st place in aesthetics
- Surveying: 1st place in leveling
- Mead Paper: 2nd place
Honorable mentions also went to the Sustainable Solutions and 3D Printing teams, which were pilot competitions this year!
The teams were supported and advised by Dr. Rebecca Kiriazes and Dr. Jason Davison; both Assistant Professors in the Civil and Environmental Engineering department. Student chapter president, Xavier Czerewko, said, “Our success at this year's symposia could not have happened without our dedicated participants, passionate team captains, and hardworking Executive Board. Thank you to all who helped in any capacity.”
Catholic University’s ASCE student chapter also earned the 2025 Most Improved Award, out of all student chapters in the nation and the Certificate of Commendation for their activities in 2024, a distinction only awarded to the top 5% of all student chapters. These awards are a testament to the hard work, dedication, and pursuit of engineering excellence demonstrated by the members, officers, and faculty advisors of this chapter.
