Biography

Gabriella Villaplana, Catholic University '24, is a Mechanical Engineering (Energy and Environment concentration) student from Bayside, New York. She has accepted a job as an Entry-Level Water Resources Engineer at AECOM, a multinational infrastructure consulting firm. 

Briefly describe your new opportunity.

"AECOM is a global leader in infrastructure consulting, known for its innovative approaches in water projects and other disciplines. As an Entry-Level Water Resources Engineer, I aim to contribute to sustainable water resource projects that enhance community resilience and ecosystem prosperity. I plan to engage in the design and implementation of crucial water infrastructure projects, focusing on clean water access and water management. My goal is to blend my mechanical engineering skills and passion for environmental sustainability to develop environmentally conscious solutions. My goal at AECOM is to contribute to the company’s legacy of creating transformational outcomes for clients and communities and making my mark as an engineer." 

How did your School of Engineering and Catholic University education help you find this career path?

"The coursework at the School of Engineering prepared me for the technical demands of the field, while the Center for Career and Academic Success provided tools for the job search and interview preparation process. Professors offered their guidance, inspiring me to align my academic pursuits with professional aspirations. This supportive environment contributed to my skills and confidence, leaving me well prepared to embrace the challenges of an engineering career with conviction and readiness."

What activities were you involved in during undergrad?

"I was a member of the Women's Tennis team, American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), Society of Women Engineers (SWE), Student Organization of Latinos (SOL), Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE), and the Society of Catholic Scientists."

What were some highlights of your time at The Catholic University of America?

"My time at Catholic was a blend of academic exploration and self growth. The creation of an Archaeology Flotation System as my senior design project was a defining moment; I had the opportunity to apply my mechanical engineering knowledge from my four years here, with the principles of energy and environmental systems. Through a focus on energy and the environment within my mechanical engineering studies, I found my passion. Joining the Women’s Tennis team my junior year brought me unexpected joy and a rewarding sense of team spirit and commitment. Beyond the classroom and tennis court, the deep connections I made with professors and fellow students were invaluable, enriching my experience and providing a foundation for both my career and life."

What advice do you have for students during their own job search?

"In navigating the job search, I'd advise students to utilize every resource at their disposal. Start the process early and make full use of the career services Catholic University offers. Don't hesitate to reach out to professors and mentors for guidance, their insights can be invaluable and they want to help you. Each connection made can open new doors, so network with purpose and maintain those relationships beyond your first job search. Keep learning, stay adaptable, and approach each opportunity with enthusiasm!"
